Week 3 Assignment #1: Stage 1 Design- Reading

Established Goals:
CCS Standards: Reading-Informational Texts
       RI.6.3- Students will be able to examine how important people, events and/or ideas are        presented, illustrated, and explained in a text
       RI.6.4- Students will determine the significances of words and phrases in the context of the reading
       RI.6.6-Students will understand the author’s perspective and purpose in a text, and be able to explain how how that is delivered in the text
       RI.6.7- Students will be able to understand an idea by integrating information in different ways, including through words and different media/formats

Understandings:
Students will understand that…
·      Important information is developed in a variety of ways in a text
·      There are different strategies that can be used when determining the meaning of the words in a text
·      Different point of views are utilized by authors in order to convey information
·      Being able to utilize different medias is an important skill to be able to understand an idea
Essential Questions:
·      What are the important events, people, and/or ideas in the text?
·      What ways can you determine the meanings or important words in the text?
·      What is the purpose of the author writing this text? How do you know that?
·      How did the way in which the information was presented help you to better understand it?

Students will know…       
·      What the important ideas are in a text
·      How to use context clues within a text in order to determine the meaning of words
·      Different point of views
·      Different media or formats they may be exposed to
Students will be able to…    
·      Isolate the important information in a text
·      Identify the meaning of words and point of view
·      Obtain information from a variety of media and formats

  1. Hi Brieana,

    I think your design is well layed out, and I like your last essential question - I think it's important for these designs to add in reflection on the part of the students to make sure they're looking at the "why," not just the "what!" Personally, I think it's also important that students understand how using a different point of view may influence the information that is available to a reader or the way that information is presented; I added this as a component of my design as a way to help students reflect on different literary elements. Great job!
